entertainment in the early 1900's
Intro...
Broadway was a big thing to go out and do for the first quarter of the 1900's. Many theatres were built due to how popular this fashion was. They include the Republic on 42nd St. in 1900, The Lyric and The New Amsterdam both built in 1903, the Lew Fields Theatre in 1904 and many others were built in 1905.
From 1912 to 1924, "The Bird of Paradise", a Hawaiian cultured play, was performed 112 times mostly in New York but also in Tacoma,
Washington, Eugene, Oregon and Salt Lake City, Utah. This show,
written by Richard Tully, popularized Hawaiian music in the US in the
first 25 years of the 1900's. "The Bird of Paradise" first launched at
Daly's Theater in New York on January 8, 1912. This show was one of the
major plays in Broadway for this era.
