MId to late 1800s plays and shows
This news article represents a show at the Trocadero Vaudeville theater. In 1881, Tony Pastor opened the first Vaudeville, which introduced the theatres in Union Square, New York City. Lillian Russell and George M. Cohan are just some musical talents that aired in these new theaters. Plays and shows were a very important part of entertainment in the US just like the music industry is today. I learned that American entertainment was a lot different in the mid to late 1800's.
This comic is from the late 1800's based on true love. This is something you would see in American newspapers at this time, equivalent to the puzzles and comics displayed in our newspapers today. People would read these comics as a pass time or to entertain themselves. I've learned that comics back at this time are laid out differently and look a lot different than today's comics.
This is Tony Pastor, the founder of Vaudevilles which widely starting spreading and showing talented, entertaining plays in the 1880's. This was taken and is now displayed in the New York Public Library of Performing Arts. This picture of Pastor relates to this time of entertainment for plays which he made able to be held by creating Vaudevilles, a type of theater.
This is a picture of Bessie Clayton, a vaudeville and burlesque star from the late 1800s. It was taken in the late 1890's. She is wearing one of the traditional costumes that would have been worn in a burlesque show. Bessie Clayton relates to this topic since she plays a big role in American entertainment at this time by performing in many burlesque shows and plays and even in vaudevilles.
This a play called The Black Crook, which came out in 1866. The main dancer was Marie Bonafanti and it was choreographed by David Costa. The dancers in the picture are performing a piece based off a book. There were even dance shows such as "ballets" that American back in this era went and saw for entertainment on a Friday or Saturday night with their families.
This is one of the extravaganzas that went on in the 1890's. It was held by May Howard in 1898 at The Ladies Alimony Club. The people in the picture are just "partying" and having fun with their friends. The relates a ton to American entertainment at this time, it's almost like a the 1898 version of a club or bar.
This is a map of Central Park, a place where many people go to hang out, meet, or just walk their dog, etc. It includes some monuments that have been highlighted on the sides of the physical map. This informed me how long Central Park has been around because I have never known how old it was.
